چکیده

Two tribological pairs used for artificial joints were studied. Wear tests were performed in a pin-on-disc type machine modified to allow lubrication ith bovine serum. The pins were made of either AISI F138 stainless steel or ASTM F136 titanium alloy, while the discs were manufactured with ltra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). The tested pairs were ASTM F138 stainless steel–UHMWPE and ASTM F136 titanium lloy–UHMWPE. The sliding velocity was fixed to 0.58 m/s for all the tests and the variation of friction force was registered as a function of time nd normal load. Also, an electrochemical setup allowed monitoring the variation of the corrosion potential between the metallic pins and the ovine serum. The lower values of friction coefficient were measured when a thin film of polymer was transferred to the metallic surface, which led o a smooth interface and avoided debris generation. The viscoelastic behavior of UHMWPE was responsible for the increase in friction coefficient fter a testing period, which depended on the normal load and the specific pair tested. 2007 Elsevier B.V. Predictive wear modeling of the articulating metal-on-metal hip replacements.

The lubrication regime in which artificial hip joints operate adds complexity to the prediction of wear, as the joint operates in both the full fluid film regime-specifically the elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) regime-and the mixed or boundary lubrication regimes, where contact between the bearing surfaces results in wear. In this work, a wear model is developed which considers lubrication...

The Genotoxic Potential of Novel Materials Used in Modern Hip Replacements for Young Patients

Total hip replacement (THR), one of the most successful and cost effective surgical interventions introduced in the last 50 or so years in medicine and the second most common elective operation in the UK (Sheldon et al., 1996, Garellick et al., 1998), owes most of its success to the introduction of hard-on-soft arthroplasty by Charnley. Arthroplasty (from the Greek ‘arthrosis’ = ‘joint’ and ‘-p...

Head replacement, head rotation, and surface damage effects on metal-on-metal total hip replacements: a hip simulator study.

The possibility of replacing the femoral head alone, in either solid or articular surface replacement form, during revision operations on metal-on-metal total hip replacements remains an attractive feature of such implants. In the present investigation, laboratory simulator studies of the influence upon volumetric wear of inserting a new femoral head, of introducing some head rotation, and of d...

Effect of motion inputs on the wear prediction of artificial hip joints

Hip joint simulators have been largely used to assess the wear performance of joint implants. Due to the complexity of joint movement, the motion mechanism adopted in simulators varies. The motion condition is particularly important for ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) since polyethylene wear can be substantially increased by the bearing cross-shear motion. Computational wear m...

Microscale wear behavior and crosslinking of PEG-like coatings for total hip replacements

The predominant cause of late-state failure of total hip replacements is wear-mediated osteolysis caused by wear particles that originate from the ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) acetabular cup surface. One strategy for reducing wear particle formation from UHMWPE is to modify the surface with a hydrophilic coating to increase lubrication from synovial fluid. This study focuses...
